Renovated Hampstead Train Station. |
Train Station |
In 1996 Wayne Thomas co-chaired a committee of citizens that wanted to save and restore the Hampstead Train Station, the symbol of the Town of Hampstead. In 1997 Wayne Thomas incorporated the committee into the Hampstead Train Station Committee to save the Hampstead Train Depot. .
The Town purchased the Train Station from CSX in January 1998. The Committee began the renovation of the station in March 1998. The volunteer workers were able to replace the roof and stabilized the station by 2000. In 2000, the Hampstead Train Station Committee purchased the station from the Town of Hampstead and applied for grants to complete the renovation. In 2001 the Committee received grants from Preservation Maryland ($5000) and the Maryland Historical Trust ($50,000) to help complete the renovations. The Committee had to put up cash and in-kind services to cover the remaining $50,000 in costs. Wayne Thomas personally guaranteed the $35,000 loan from a local bank so that the Committee could receive the grants and complete the renovations. The renovation was completed in 2007. The Hampstead Train Station Committee received a donation of a caboose in 2008 from Art and Judy Risso. The caboose was moved to the Hampstead Train Station site and installed on a set of tracks adjacent to the station. The Risso's also paid for a complete renovation and painting of the caboose. The picture shows the caboose in the traditional Western Maryland Railroad colors. The renovated Hampstead Train Station is located at 4035 Gill Avenue and is open from Hampstead Day until Halloween on Saturdays from 9 AM until 3 PM. Donations can be sent to The Hampstead Train Station Committee, Inc., P. O. Box 727, Hampstead, Maryland 21074. |
